PPP 2007-11-09 Indoor training…

Just a simple parkour training video… for personal reference mostly.

I’ve been having problems working up the courage to try/practice certain techniques outdoors. Unfortunately, if I’m not willing to try them outdoors, then I can’t even become comfortable with the basic mechanics associated with those techniques. So, I joined a local gymnastics club with the hopes that I may overcome these mental obstacles.

My parkour path is modest and still in its early stages…

More personal parkour progress (PPP) to come.

  1. I think training in gyms is very bad to be honest.

Parkour is as much mental as physical.

You should be very slowly progressing outdoors, waiting until you’re 100% confident with them, not rushing in a gym by throwing yourself where you don’t have to be careful due to amts etc.

Good luck to you and all, but in the long run, I feel it’s ahrmful.

E-mail me if you wish to chat about it.

  2. Hi Hategiving,

I’m going to have to agree and disagree with you on this one.

I whole-heartedly agree that parkour is as much mental as it is physical — arguably even more so. The mental side has always been far more difficult for me to push and develop than the physical. As far as being harmful in the long run, however, I have to disagree somewhat.

Sometimes, no matter how patiently you train outdoors and slowly you force yourself to progress, if you panic every time you attempt a technique (as I did) your body will never become accustomed to the proper simple mechanics required to do it. By practising it indoors, in a safe environment, I was able to prove to myself that I was actually capable of doing an otherwise mentally debilitating technique.

Now, if I were to go about my training, pretending that practising indoor jumps like this meant I could immediately go and reproduce the same speed, height, distance, etc. outdoors… then yeah, that would just a tad naive and stupid of me. However, by proving to myself that I was physically able to move a certain way or jump a certain distance indoors, did give me the edge I needed to progress (albeit slowly) past some of my mental blocks.

    Thanks for your thoughts.
